Hailing from the UK and Detroit, Michigan, respectively, Julian Peploe and David Ryan are the vision and hands-on creators behind Stone and Sawyer. For the two, Stone and Sawyer represents the dream of creating objects they love that in turn bring beauty and light into other's lives. Their respect for nature and reverence for natural materials is at the core of the company's value system.
As business owners, David and Julian believe in creating sustainable long-term jobs that pay above a living wage, offer a healthy quality of life, provide a symbiotic economic relationship with their local community, and maintain a small carbon footprint. Rounding out the Stone and Sawyer team are Derek, Erica, Tom B and Tom P—all born and raised in Delaware County, New York—and Colleen, who, like David and Julian, has chosen to make her life in this beautiful corner of the country.
In addition to loving what they do, the Stone and Sawyer team is steadfastly focused on quality and integrity, giving their utmost attention to every project, no matter its size.
Our Process
We continually refine our processes to ensure that each Stone and Sawyer lamp surpasses our clients' expectations.
We produce every stoneware lamp body in our workshop with scrupulous attention to detail. Ceramic as a material is highly responsive and we understand that from a vessel's inception, it must be handled and prepared with utmost care and consistency to ensure that the final fired form, many steps later, is absolutely perfect. Each ceramic lamp body is extensively hand sanded, then leveled and sponged smooth prior to bisque firing. After initial firing, the vessels are removed from the kiln, washed and inspected. Every minor surface imperfection is sanded or repaired. Once we are satisfied that the entire surface is unblemished, it is ready for glazing. We hand glaze our ceramic bodies by spray application of many thin layers. The result is an extremely refined glazed surface that offers the subtlest range of character.
To enhance and preserve the character of our brass hardware, we resurface every component—some by hand, some on our workshop lathe—prior to clear sealing or blackening. Our Satin Brass hardware has a smooth satin finish. Our Blackened Brass hardware undergoes multiple plating processes, resulting in a rich, even satin-black finish.
We work exclusively with hardwoods and a local wood turner for all necks, bases and caps for our lamps. Each piece is hand turned, finished and sealed to bring out its richness and character. Many of our wood components are custom turned to match the exact diameter of the fired ceramic lamp body.
